2019 Citroen C5 Aircross: Initial details

All-new SUV to arrive during Q3 2019 priced from $39,990 with high levels of spec to take on the CX-5 and Tiguan.

Citroen Australia has revealed initial pricing and specifications for the upcoming C5 Aircross, set to be priced from $39,990 plus on-roads when it arrives early in the third quarter.

Despite being priced at the higher end of the medium SUV segment, the C5 Aircross will be an ‘all the fruit’ proposition much like its smaller C3 Aircross sibling, limiting cost options to premium paints.

In saying that, two trim levels will be offered, with the entry-level ‘Pure’ starting at the aforementioned $39,990 while the top-spec ‘Shine‘ will be priced from $43,990 before ORCs.

Standard equipment will include 18-inch alloys, automatic headlights and wipers, an 8.0-inch infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, LED daytime-running lights, and the company’s new Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension system, which claims to offer a magic carpet ride by using two hydraulic bump stops on each shock absorber to iron out bumps and slow suspension movements after hitting large imperfections.

The suspension technology first debuted in the facelifted C4 Cactus, though that model looks unlikely to reach our shores.

Further to the comfort-focused suspension setup, the C5 Aircross will deploy a new seat foam technology, dubbed ‘Advanced Comfort Seats’, which feature 2-15mm of extra foam depending on the area of the seat to mimic memory foam.

Other nifty features that will be standard across the range are sliding rear seats, three Isofix child seat mounts across the second row, and a spacious boot measuring between 580L and 720L depending on the position of the sliding rear bench.

Stepping up to the Shine will add luxury features like leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof, along with larger alloys.

Power will come from a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 121kW at 6000rpm and 240Nm at 1400rpm – the same motor used in the related Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs.

Drive will be sent exclusively to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic as standard. There will be no all-wheel drive option for the time being.
