2020 Porsche 911 Targa spied

The new Targa looks like it’s maintained the same roll hoop and roof mechanism as the car it replaces, but it’ll get more grunt than before.

Porsche’s stable of 911 models is getting ready to expand, with an undisguised 992-generation Targa snapped around the famous Nurburgring.

Launched at the Los Angeles motor show last year, we’ve only seen the 911 Carrera S in coupe and convertible form. The base Carrera is yet to surface, and the usual array of GT faster models – GT3, GT3 RS and GTS – are also yet to arrive.

The new Targa will follow a very similar theme to the car it replaces based on what we can see. For one, it’ll maintain the metal roll hoop and canvas roof section, which would suggest the complex open/close mechanism will also carry over.

For those playing along at home, the current 991-generation Targa’s glass section lifts up in its entirety and the canvas segment slots in underneath it, at which point the glass section folds down again.

Down back, the Targa has the same slim lighting unit as the wider range, along with the slatted cooling vent above it. We’d expect the wheels to change for production, and the tape will be removed, but otherwise you’re looking at what appears to be a factory-spec car.
