Renault City K-ZE revealed for China

The Chinese market is getting an electric version of the Kwid, as Renault chases 550,000 sales in the market by 2022.

Renault has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle for the Chinese market at the Shanghai motor show, as it chases 550,000 annual sales in China by 2022.

The City K-ZE is the result of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s joint venture with Dongfeng. It looks very similar to the Kwid offered in developing markets, but the face has been tweaked for the Chinese carpark and, naturally, there’s a battery pack under the floor.

Behind the wheel, Renault hasn’t exactly chased the luxury market. There’s an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the dashboard, and an air-quality control sensor to minimise the smog, but the car looks more utilitarian than opulent in pictures.

Range is expected to be somewhere around 250km, but Renault hasn’t provided figures at this stage.

Hooked up to a fast charger it’ll replenish from zero to 80 per cent charge in 50 minutes, while a full charge will take four hours on a slower wall box.

Come 2022, and the K-ZE will be one of nine Renault models built in China.
